'Citizen Kane' Blu-ray box set on the way

“Citizen Kane” marks its 70th anniversary this year and Warner Home Video is releasing a Blu-ray box set to mark the occasion, though it appears to be short on remarkable extras for such an extraordinary film.

Widely considered to be the greatest American movie ever made, the Blu-ray arrival was leaked on Amazon.com. Warner Home Video has yet to formally announce a release date.

With a $79 list price, the box set will include the original 1941 film, a previously released documentary, “The Battle Over Citizen Kane,” and a cheesy 1999 HBO film, “RKO 281,” which is (loosely) based on the making of “Kane.” A hardcover book and reproductions of vintage theatrical memorabilia are also included.

The box set will include the standard DVD (not Blu-ray) debut of Welles’ “The Magnificent Ambersons,” his follow-up to “Citizen Kane,” which was butchered by RKO studio in 1942.

There are no extras planned for “Ambersons” – nor has there been talk of a home video release of Welles third film for RKO, “Journey Into Fear.”

Wellesnet.com, the leading Welles-related film site, had put together its wish list for extras. The list included “The Complete Citizen Kane,” a superb 1991 BBC documentary, related Welles radio shows, and news coverage from the era. On its affiliated Facebook page, disappointed Welles fans derided the upcoming box set as “horrible,” “garbage” and a “disaster.” …
