(The Criterion Collection) – As Brian De Palma’s work continues to find new and increasingly high-quality home video releases, Criterion throws down a considerable gauntlet with their new set for “Blow Out,” the filmmaker’s tribute/reimagining of Antonioni’s “Blow Up.” The new Blu-ray features a spectacular high- definition transfer that gives the film a clarity and sheen it hasn’t enjoyed in decades, as well as an hourlong documentary with DePalma about the film, a new interview with star Nancy Allen, an early De Palma film, “Murder a la Mod,” an interview with the cameraman who helped coordinate the film’s elaborate Steadicam shots, and a collection of photographs from the set. Essential viewing for all De Palma fans as well as cinephiles looking for further evidence of his genius, “Blow Out” is an immaculately-assembled set that more than doe the director’s film justice.
