While the battle for Biggest Controversy at Sundance 2011 rages on through the next week or so, another little contest is getting underway on January 25 that will inevitably attract the attention of the moviegoing public: the Academy Awards. But while the Oscar race heats up, there are thankfully a terrific variety of new DVD and Blu-ray releases available to give you your own private competition: Best Time-Filler.

With the exception of a multiple-Oscar-winning film from writer-director James L. Brooks, this week’s picks are relatively lean on potential nominees, unless the governing body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to take LSD before making their picks. But whether you agree with our pans or oppose our picks, take a look at just a few of the Blu-rays and DVDs we think are worth your attention, much less money.
