'Catfish', 'Machete' and Other Blu-ray Releases of the Week: 01/04/11

Thanks in no small part of post-holiday burnout, last week’s home video offerings were so meager that we couldn’t even come up with five titles to discuss. But as 2011 gets cranked up, distributors and DVD/ Blu-ray producers are already starting to churn out some really choice entertainment. Interestingly, however, there’s an unexpected shortage of Oscar candidates among the films being released, which speaks either to the rush of content studios provided before the end of last year, or the confidence that their theatrical runs and awards-season campaigns will raise enough awareness for potential candidates that distributors don’t need to get hard copies of the films into consumers (and especially voters’) hands.

As a result, there are a few new releases among the week’s offerings, but there are just as many catalogue titles making an upgrade to high-definition, and finally, even a title making its debut on home video after bypassing theaters altogether. But whether you agree with our pans or oppose our picks, take a look at just a few of the highest-profile Blu-rays and DVDs being released this week.
