In spite of its seeming blitz of single-minded, money-spending celebration, the holiday season offers a multi-pronged attack strategy for separating consumers from their cash. In some cases, awards-season darlings draw in audiences who grew impatient suffering through summer blockbusters; in others, school closures and vacation time provides the perfect landing strip for mindless, escapist spectacle. As a result, the home video offerings that arrive during this time are often a mixed bag of big and small films, arthouse and populist fare, new releases and venerated classics. And the growing market for high-definition content only gives distributors more freedom to repackage and re-release movies that you may have bought as recently as last year’s holiday season. To say nothing of our own preferences, which would fall somewhere in the vicinity of Victorian-era dramas populated by giant robots that turn into fire-breathing dragons, this week’s picks are a truly eclectic cross-section of all of these offerings. But while some of the titles listed below may not provide optimal (or even improved) presentation or bonus material, they are nonetheless some of the week’s most highly-anticipated Blu-rays, so check out our choice for what we are — and in some cases aren’t — watching.
